Publishing Web pages
This page contains information about publishing pages to your or your department/student organization's Web space.
NOTE: You will connect to your Web space with your university NetID username and password. You must be able to log into other GU NetID-enabled services (i.e. Student/Faculty/Employee Access+, GUMail) before being able to successfully publish to our Web environment.
NOTE: For departments who have a site hosted in KeySite or KeySite Enterprise, please visit http://keysite.georgetown.edu or http://kse.georgetown.edu to access and edit your site's content. For student organizations who have a site hosted through http://studentorgs.georgetown.edu using the Explore system, please e-mail webmaster at georgetown.edu with questions.
How do I publish my Web pages?
The shared-hosting Web servers use the Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) to publish files to your Web space. User or department-specific configuration information will be e-mailed to you when your Web space is first created or you are grant publishing rights. You will need this information to connect to your Web space using an SFTP client.
This page contains a list of SFTP clients that have been UIS-tested, and can successfully connect to our Web environment so you can publish pages. If your SFTP client is not listed, then UIS can only provide best-effort support in regards to troubleshooting connectivity problems.
HTML Editors
HTML editors are good for individuals who do not have any previous experience developing in HTML. They range in capabilities depending on the program purchased. While some allow for basic development, others allow you to work with other technologies all inside the one program.
Adobe Dreamweaver is one of the more powerful HTML editors on the market. The latest version has a built-in SFTP service and can be used to connect to your Web space to publish Web pages without the use of one of our SFTP clients (listed below).
Please note that some older versions (earlier than version 8) of Dreamweaver may not support SFTP connections, which means you will not be able to connect to your Web space using that program. Therefore, you will need to use an SFTP client to upload your pages or upgrade to the latest version of Dreamweaver.
Dreamweaver is available for use in the Gelardin New Media Center on the first floor of Lauinger Library. Please contact HoyaComputing at x7-0640 or hoyacomputing at georgetown.edu for purchasing a Dreamweaver license. For step-by-step instructions on connecting to your Web space using Dreamweaver, you can view the Dreamweaver online tutorial.
File Transfer Software
File transfer software allows for you to upload and download files to your Web space. It is recommended for users who are developing their Web site in another program.
There are three SFTP clients that are promoted for use for connecting to your Web space:
-
FileZilla (Windows, Mac)
-
SSH Secure Shell (Windows)
-
Fugu (Mac)
Besides the platform availability, there are no major functionality differences between programs. If you do not know which one to use, it is suggested to download multiple clients and use them simultaneously until you develop a preference for one.
FileZilla is a file transfer software program that can be used to connect to the servers via SFTP. There are versions available for both the Windows and Mac platforms. You may download the client for free from SourceForge.net. The How to Use FileZilla tutorial gives step-by-step directions for connecting to Georgetown's servers using FileZilla.
SSH Secure Shell serves the same purpose as FileZilla. It is only available on the Windows platform. This is available to students, faculty, and staff for download from the Software Lending Library. The How to Use SSH Secure Shell tutorial gives step-by-step directions for connecting to Georgetown's servers using SSH Secure Shell.
Fugu serves the same purpose as the previous programs. However, this program is only available in the Mac platform. You may download the client for free from http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/. A step-by-step tutorial for connecting to GU servers using Fugu is being created, and will soon be available for viewing.
